Cheo'nyeo-gwisin (處女鬼神) — The Maiden Wraith

She who closed her eyes never dressed in bridal white sleeps now inside the skirts of the living bride.

※ Machine translation.

A presence that has haunted the old whispers of the Korean peninsula. She is the transformed vengeful spirit of a young woman who left this world before she could be wed, and she is known also by the names Son'gaksi or Sonmalmyeong — names said to carry within them the meaning of "a hand that never reached its destination."

This ghost is said to attach herself to an unmarried girl of similar age, one who has not yet gone to a husband's house. Some say she first reveals herself in the surface of a mirror; others tell of a sound like combing in the night, and a fistful of hair found on the floor come morning. The afflicted girl wastes away without cause, and every prospect of marriage falls apart before it can take hold.

Among these spirits, those powerful enough to be called Wangsin — the King-Wraith — are of an altogether different order. Said to consume not a single person but an entire household, they gave rise to a custom of enshrining them as domestic deities. It was a paradoxical coexistence: left unappeased, the spirit becomes catastrophe; appeased, she may at least be persuaded to delay it.

In folk practice, rituals were sometimes performed to resolve the maiden wraith's grief — a posthumous wedding ceremony conducted on behalf of the dead. A paper effigy of a bridegroom would be buried alongside her remains, or bridal foods laid out to comfort the wandering soul. Even now, stories are not rare of households that knew no quiet until such a rite had been carried out.

To this day, the elders of old villages say that when an unmarried daughter of marriageable age falls ill without explanation, the first thing to be examined is whether something has attached itself to her. The belief that the bitterness of a death unaccompanied by marriage does not soften with time has survived, in the form of rumor, all the way to the present.
