The Red Room

The confession has ended — yet that room is still waiting for someone.

※ Machine translation.

There is a rumour of a certain grotesque club that was born in the half-dark of the Taishō era. Its members would gather in a sealed chamber with the lights extinguished and perform, again and again, a ritual of offering up one another's secrets. On one such night, it is said, a single man rose quietly to his feet and began to speak of his own "amusement."

What the man describes is a method of killing that cannot rightly be called killing — a criminal technique that layers coincidence upon coincidence until it hardens into inevitability. Known as "the crime of probability," it leaves no shadow of a perpetrator anywhere. Suspicion disperses like fog, and only death remains, perfectly still.

This tale, set down by Edogawa Ranpo (江戸川乱歩) in 1925, wears the costume of detective fiction while functioning, in truth, as something closer to a specimen case for dissecting the dark appetites of humankind. A poison distilled from Tanizaki Jun'ichirō's (谷崎潤一郎) aesthetics of crime was arranged by Ranpo's brush upon the shelf labelled "everyday life."

At the story's end, a single move is laid in wait — one that inverts everything the narrator has confessed into fiction. Yet that reversal only deepens the unease. A lie should bring relief — and yet those who finish reading whisper that, for some reason, the walls of the room appear to have taken on a faint blush of red.

Even now the rumour drifts quietly through the margins of old paperbacks and the small hours of late-night reading circles. The Red Room may not be a place at all — it may be the colour that kindles inside anyone who has heard the confession, a colour that never goes out.
