Hanako of the Toilet (トイレの花子さん)

Whoever knocks three times on the third door will come to regret what answers.

※ Machine translation.

Third floor of the school building. Third stall of the girls' restroom. On an after-school afternoon when no one should remain, if you perform the proper ritual call — from beyond that thin partition door, a faint "yes" seeps through. A bobbed haircut. A red skirt. For more than half a century, her image has been told and retold in the rumors of children across the entire country.

Countless fragments drift around the question of Hanako's origins. A girl who crept into the school, was chased by something, and hid herself in that third stall — never to come home again. The spirit of a girl who kept her father's bruises hidden beneath her bobbed hair. The soul of an elementary schooler who fell through a cesspit access hatch. Which account is "correct," no one knows. Perhaps simply because so few have ever wished to find out.

As her legend crosses from region to region, Hanako's outline warps. In Yamagata, if the voice that answers carries a "disagreeable resonance," it is taken as an omen of doom. A separate Yamagata rumor holds that she is not a girl at all, but a three-headed giant lizard mimicking a child's voice to lure its prey. In Iwate, a large white hand crawls up through a hole in the floor. In Shimane, she gives chase to anyone who refuses her invitation to play. The apparition reshapes itself with every locality — yet the number three never changes.

The urban legend known in the 1950s as "Hanako of the Third Stall" is considered her prototype; from the 1980s onward she spread across the nation. Riding the occult boom of the 1990s, she materialized in film and manga alike. Somewhere in the body of rumor, a recording survives — a voice allegedly captured during a television broadcast.

There are regions that warn: when she invites you to play, you must never answer "the strangling game." Because Hanako receives words as promises.

Even now, somewhere in a school restroom, there exists a third stall that goes unused. Sometimes, on the inside of its door, a child's scrawled message can still be found: *To Hanako.* What became of the child who wrote it has not been recorded anywhere.
