Hachishaku-sama (八尺様)

Beyond the hedge, only the brim of a hat was visible — and it rose well above a hedge nearly two metres tall.

※ Machine translation.

A towering female apparition said to appear along rural farm tracks and beyond the hedgerows of the countryside. Her height is eight shaku — roughly two hundred and forty centimetres. She wears a white or black dress and conceals her face beneath a white hat. It is only when the brim of that hat drifts into view that one grasps her true height — and by then, it is already too late.

The sound attributed to her, rendered as *po po po*, is described as a low, laughing murmur that belongs neither to any human throat nor to any machine. Yet one must not grow careless. Hachishaku-sama can shift her voice at will, borrowing the tones of a parent or a close friend to call out a name. The knock at the door, the whisper drifting from beyond the window — these too, it is said, are snares laid to make one turn without thinking.

She preys especially on children and those who have not yet reached adulthood. Those who fall under her fascination are taken within days, or simply cease to breathe. Long ago, stone Jizō statues enshrined in the villages of the San'in region were said to bind her to a fixed territory. Those statues, however, have since been shattered by unknown hands, and it is whispered that she is no longer tethered to any particular place — that she may now appear anywhere at all.

According to the old accounts, the only recourse is to keep a protective charm pressed against one's skin at all times, to heap salt in the four corners of the room, and to refuse absolutely to step outside before seven in the morning. One must never speak to her, and to point a finger in her direction is strictly forbidden. There is, however, one further fact that must be noted — it is said that not a single person who has ever truly encountered Hachishaku-sama has lived to pass the story on themselves.

This apparition spread across the internet in 2008 through an anonymous post, propagating swiftly as a piece of contemporary oral tradition. However transparent its origins may be, a rumour that is repeated enough times grows flesh and begins to walk on its own. Even now, somewhere along a lonely country road, a pale hat brim may be swaying in a place that rises far above the top of the hedge.
