Eoduksini (어둑시니)

At the end of a dark alley, beneath a staircase where no streetlight reaches—that is where the sightings begin. At first it appears to be nothing more than a dense shadow. Something roughly the height of a person. But the instant you raise your head to get a better look, it has already grown larger.

The Eoduksini is said to feed on fear itself. The greater the terror of the one who watches, the more its bulk swells; the higher the eyes are lifted, the higher it surges, as though it means to swallow the sky. The old stories all carry the same warning—never look up.

The testimonies of those who survived share one thing in common. They looked down at their feet. As they fixed their gaze on the ground and kept walking, the shadow shrank by degrees, until at last it dissolved beneath their toes like a scattering of dust. Not the turning away from fear, but the lowering of one's eyes to a place beneath fear—that is the only way.

Those who were crushed to death, it is said, could not bring themselves to bow their heads in time. When a shape grows so immense that the boundary between awe and terror begins to blur, human beings will look up—it is instinct. The Eoduksini waits for precisely that instinct.

Even now, rumors surface from time to time of a shadow spotted in the small hours of some back alley, a shadow that felt strangely, wrongly large. It is dismissed as an optical illusion born of city lights—but if that shadow was growing in a direction that had nothing to do with any light source, the story becomes something else entirely.
