Samshin Halmae (삼신할미)

Goddess of birth and weaver of fate. Samshin Halmae is said to hold a child's first breath even before it enters the world. Some claim the "sam" in her name refers to poтае (胞胎)—the act of carrying life itself—and whether its echo of the number three is coincidence or intention, no one can say with certainty.

She dwells in every village, in every house. One deity, yet present everywhere at once. If a jar sealed with paper sits in the corner of the inner room, filled to the brim with rice, it means Samshin Halmae has taken up residence there. The knot binding it must always be tied counter-clockwise—not to be undone, but because the binding itself is the protection.

A straw rope is hung across the gate of a house where a child has been born. It is a warning to the outside world, but it is also a silent acknowledgment that something keeps watch beside the child within, throughout those twenty-one days. Even the mother, it is said, must never try to look upon that presence directly.

In oral myth, Samshin Halmae's original form was Danggeum Aegi (당금애기), a maiden who descended from the heavens. Alone in a cave, she gave birth to the three spirits of life, and that act became the origin of all living things upon this earth. Until a child turns seven, it remains within her embrace; only then is it passed on to the Chilseong—the stars of the Great Bear. What that moment of handover truly means is never spoken aloud.

The stories persist even now. A woman without children who shares a meal from the table of a mother who has just given birth will receive some of that blessing, they say; and there are those who still speak of wrapping oneself in cloth that has touched a coffin as a way of drawing life into the body. For Samshin Halmae is the one who pulls the living from the very edge of death.

Even today, in certain homes on Jeju Island, a bowl of rice is set out on the morning of a holiday at a seat where no one sits. Whether this is courtesy, or fear, or a contract that remains in force—the only one who could answer has not yet been born.
